DIRK du Plooy (69) van Astonbaai voer al ’n jarelange stryd teen slaggate, oorgroeide erwe en ander probleme, soos randstene wat nie geverf word nie.

Dirk, ’n afgetrede bankbestuurder wat hom in Jeffreysbaai kom vestig het, het take op hom geneem waarvoor die gewone jongmens nie eens kans sien nie, om van ander lede van die publiek nie eers te praat nie. Hy is ’n bekende gesig in die strate van Astonbaai wanneer hy slaggate toe-stop, randstene verf, die strate vee wanneer die munisipaliteit ’n erf ontbos het.

Hy sê hy wil op dié wyse ’n positiewe bydrae lewer. Dit wil voorkom asof mense, soos hy en die Dorp van Drome, die belange van Jeffreysbaai meer op die hart dra as ander, én iets daaraan doen, eerder as om heeldag kritiek te lewer.

Dirk het jare gelede ’n ernstige hart-operasie ondergaan en die wond het om een of ander rede nie toegegroei nie. Maar in weerwil van die ongemak, bly hy steeds die positiewe mens wat meer as sy deel doen om die dorp woonbaar en vriendelik te hou. “Kan ek iets positief sê?” vra hy op sy vriendelik manier? “Die muisipaliteit verskaf die verf vir die randstene!”
