THE sound is almost buttery, the turbo-charged five-cylinder never sounding stressed as the driver goes quickly up through the gears, purring the car’s 600bhp onto the road . . . the volume of the noise and the speed of the car increases . . . it is a beautiful rounded bellow . . .

Rally fans can hear the engines popping and crackling invisibly up the road until, finally the car comes into view and, whoooooom, it is gone again - sending that T-Rex fear feeling tingling down fans’ caveman spines, it is pure magic.

The Algoa Club 50k rally challenge will roar into Jeffreys Bay on October 29.

Some 20 rally car drivers from as far as Cape Town and Bloemfontein will battle it out at the penultimate round which is made up of a mixture of tar and gravel roads, as well as fast and hairpin corners. Drivers and navigators will have to work as a team with pace notes called to guide the driver over blind rises and sharp corners.

The high-action rally will start at the Fountains Mall Shopping, with the first vehicle taking to the stage at 10:00. From Fountains Mall, drivers will make their way to Jubilee and Boplaas farms before returning to their pit stops at Fountains Mall and making their way to Zuurbron and Melon.

The rally-action will come to an end at Fountains Mall at 16:30. The prize-giving will take place at E-Street. The winning driver and navigator will walk away with Tissot watches sponsored by Gabriel Jewellers.
