SOME 20 mountain bike riders from the local community will put their pedal power to the test at the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic on July 15 and 16.

The Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, the main sponsor of the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic, sponsored 10 avid mountain bike riders from Pellsrus in Jeffreys Bay, as well as 10 young mountain bike riders from Pellsrus and Sea Vista in St Francis Bay to compete at this year’s MTB Classic which forms part of the annual JBay WinterFest that takes place from July 6 to 17.

The younger riders will take to the dirt road on July 15, while the older riders will saddle up on July 16.

This sponsorship forms part of the wind farm’s rider-development programme.

“The MTB Classic gives us the opportunity to make the wind farm more accessible to the surrounding communities,” says Mark Pickering, General Manager of the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm.

As last year, a team from the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm will ride alongside the team of development-riders.

Eshel Albrecht from the Pellsrus Community, who was sponsored last year says, “The JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic inspired us to enter more events. It furthermore gave us the confidence to improve our riding skills. We learnt so much and met loads of new people.”

The JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic will feature some exciting new developments and improvements.

The three routes - 25km fun ride, 50km half-marathon and 85km ultra - will offer something for all skill and fitness levels.

Participants will race through the wind farm, riding along roads that are interspersed by 80m tall wind turbine towers spread more than 500m apart.

The race will start and finish at the Kabeljous Hub.
