Kids learn about the law and emergency services

2017-02-02 06:01

KOUGA’S Disaster Management Unit and Fire Department joined forces with the police K-9 Dog Unit last week for an outreach to deep rural communities of the Gamtoos Valley.

The audience at the Kouga Dam Park, where the outreach was held, consisted of more than 100 learners from Andrieskraal, Du Preez and Cockscomb Primary Schools.

Together with their Sarah Baartman District Municipality counterparts, the Disaster Management team shared information on what is classified as a disaster, how to avoid or prevent disasters and what the response should be for different types of disaster, as well as the contact numbers for local emergency services.

There was some animation when the police brought out their different dogs to demonstrate their various functions, with the children in awe of the skills displayed by the canines.

There was more action when the little ones were given the opportunity to play firefighters and took turns putting out the demo fire with extinguishers, under the guidance of Kouga’s firemen.

There were also lessons on causes of fire, prevention and response to fire situations.

Social Services Portfolio Councillor Danny Benson said the outreach was necessary mainly for two reasons.

“These demos are important because they create awareness about the services we offer while educating children and the broader community about certain dangers and how to get through those.

“It is further important that communities who live far away from the urban areas are included in such programmes and do not feel neglected,” he said.

Benson added that young children also drew inspiration in terms of career options once they are exposed to the various services.
