THE Kouga u.13 cricket team became the first champions of the Eastern Province KFC T20 tournament held this past weekend - beating more than 100 school and district teams competing for this prestigious honour.

Local players from the Kouga Cricket Performance Centre (KCPC), as well as other players from the region, teamed up to form the Kouga team that competed in the semi-finals and finals at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on March 12.

In the heat of the semi-finals, the Kouga team players beat Motherwell with 39 runs. This victory was followed by a 17-run win in the final match against Winterberg.

The team, under the guidance of coach Ralton Fortuin and team manager Duran v Rooyen, played exceptionally well in both matches and impressed with their team spi-rit, manners on and off the field and great fielding.

Achievements on the day

Semi-final

.Jonathan Bester (Pharos)- 40 runs and one wicket

. Rowan Bailey - (Pharos) - 34 runs and two wickets for nine runs

. JD van Zyl (Jeffreys Bay Primary School) - two wickets for 13 runs

. Jay Brown (Stulting Primary School) - two wickets for 12 runs

Final

. Rowan Bailey (Pharos) - wicket with the first ball of the Winterberg innings

. Jayden Groenewald (Stulting Primary School) - 31 runs and batsman of the final award. He also took two wickets

. Jonathan Bester (Pharos) - 24 runs, four wickets for five runs, bowler match, man of the match

. Gurswin Nelslaai (Hankey Primary School) - excellent fielding
