According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, the victim and suspect were involved in a quarrel before the shooting. A group of men witnessed the incident.

The victim died on his way to hospital.

“It is alleged that the group of men returned to the tavern and robbed the owner at gunpoint,” says Swart. “The suspects took cash, liquor and electronic equipment and fled in two vehicles. Police responded and arrested 22 suspects on a charge of business robbery.”

The police confiscated two firearms - one licensed and one unlicensed 9mm with six rounds. They furthermore seized 20 small packets of tik and 5g of dagga, as well as several of the stolen goods and the two vehicles used in the commission of the crimes.

The 23 suspects appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
