Mayor’s Cup rugby set for Saturday

2017-09-21 06:00

AU roads will lead to Jeffreys Bay this Saturday when Kouga’s top 14 rugby teams play for top honours in the 2017 Mayor’s Cup rugby tournament.

The tournament will kick off at the Pellsrus and Tokyo Sexwale sportsfields at 09:00, with the final match set for 18:00.

Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says the draws for the rugby tourney were done at the Mayor’s Cup launch in August.

“We’re really looking forward to watching Kouga’s teams in action. Most of them have had a good season in their respective leagues and we expect Saturday’s tourney to be a showcase for our local talent,” she says.

Preliminary programme

Hankey Villagers will take on Red Lions from Humansdorp at 09:00 in the opening match at Pellsrus. At the same time, Oceanview and KwaNomzamo will play one another at Tokyo.

At 10:15 Orlando Eagles from Thornhill and Red Lions from Weston will play at Pellsrus while the St Francis Sharks and Loerie Blues will be in action at Tokyo.

At 11:30 Humansdorp teams Kruisfontein United and the All Blacks will tackle each other at Pellsrus while Humandorp and Humansdorp United battle it out at Tokyo.

At 12:45 the last of the first round games will be played between Jeffreys Bay and the United Barbarians from Patensie while an “Old Crocs” match has been lined up for Tokyo.

The quarter-finals will follow at 14:00 and 15:15, followed by the semi-finals at 16:30pm and finals at Pellsrus at 6pm.

The gate fees for the day are R10 per adult, R5 per scholar and R10 per vehicle.
