Meer as 600 kinders in Oos-Kaap mishandel

DIE Departement van Maatskaplike Ontwikkeling het meer as 600 gevalle van kindermishandeling tussen 2015 en April 2017 in die Oos-Kaap aangeteken.

Gestremde kinders is as die kwesbaarste geïdentifiseer, het Nancy Sihlwayi, LUR vir dié departement, gister op Stutterheim gesê.

“Neigings dui daarop dat gestremde kinders steeds deur gemeenskappe vermy of geïgnoreer word. Terwyl ons samelewing worstel met die ongekende voorvalle van kindermoord oor die land heen, ly gestremde kinders steeds in stilte.

“Ons moet ’n afdwingbare verdedigingslinie teen kindermishandeling bied, veral vir daardie kinders wat niemand het om namens hulle te praat nie,” het Sihlwayi gesê.

Die hoof van die Siyavuya-sentrum vir gestremde kinders op Stutterheim, Zoleka July, sê gestremde kinders kan slegs beskerm word indien gestremdheid in die hoofstroom hanteer word.

“Kinders verdien om gelukkig te wees en beskerm te word, veral gestremdes, aange- sien hulle geen stem het nie. Ons moet seker maak dat hulle in gemeenskappe aanvaar word,” het July gesê. - Roslyn Baatjies
