THE Kouga Arts Council held its Annual General Meeting at the Humansdorp Country Club last week Friday and elected a new leadership.

The Kouga Arts Council (KAC) is a civic structure of people from different disciplines in the arts industry and is responsible for arts and culture development, while the municipality plays a facilitation role.

Three members from the old structure – Nomzamo Williams, Mavis Matika and Nomfukamo Matika – were re-elected to the new committee.

The other members are Amore Minaar, Mazangwandile Norushu and Nkosinathi Miwa.

In their first meeting, the executive will elect among themselves the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer and Development and Marketing Officer.

Delivering her report to the meeting, outgoing KAC Chairperson Williams thanked the Kouga Municipality for the unwavering support, financially and administratively.

“We, however, need to strengthen the relationship with the local municipality and ensure that our activities are aligned and find expression in the municipal Integrated Development Plan,” she said.

Williams added that a stronger relationship needed to be built with schools as they were hubs where the target age groups were found.

Tourism and Creative Industries Portfolio Councillor Frances Baxter thanked the outgoing executive for their hard work in ensuring that arts and culture activities were well coordinated in Kouga.

“Arts and culture are very important vehicles towards nation building and towards us reclaiming our moral and social fabric. The role that this committee plays doesn’t just end with providing entertainment,” she said.

Baxter said the new committee could rely on the municipality for continued support in all their good endea-vours.

The executive of the KAC is empowered by its constitution to co-opt members with special skills and to address geographic and demographic representation in the arts council.
