AVID animal activist and guardian angel of furry friends - known and unknown - Ciske Vorster now gives animal lovers the sweetest reason to bake and cook.

She, in conjunction with Jeffreys Bay Animals in Need, is pulling on heart and apron strings in aid of the SPCA in Humansdorp, encouraging residents to arm themselves with a mixing bowl and spoon in the fight against animal cruelty.

Vorster, who works at a law firm in Jeffreys Bay by day and fights for the protection and care of animals by night, has released a must-have cookbook, Cook for a Cause - bursting with delicious recipes handed down from her mother and friends.

The cookbook boasts 50 recipes, ranging from snacks to main meals and salads to desserts. There are even five healthy recipes for pet treats: rock & roll biscuits, bacon bones, pumpkin puppy treats, carrot bites and doggy delights.

“The cookbook caters for everyone, whether you are a vegan, vegetarian or meat lover,” says Vorster.

“The majority of the recipes come from my restaurant manager mom, Rickie Vorster, which she collected during her lifetime. Some of them even come from my grandmother, like the old style malva pudding and apple tart. You will look far to find better.”

There is even a baby marrow salad that can be spruced up with salami should you prefer a non-vegetarian option.

According to Vorster, this cookbook would not have been possible without the help of her co-workers at Jeffreys Bay Animals in Need. “Suzanne Kruger, Debbie Lewis and Brenda Posthumus thank you for always being there when I need you, but most of all, thank you for the love you show towards animals in need.”

Cook for a Cause costs R60 and is available from Vorster at 071 328 0598 or Suzanne Kruger at 079 506 8748.

The proceeds will be donated to the SPCA Asissi Humansdorp.

“I truly hope that this cookbook brings a lot of joy and laughter to family and friends,” says Vorster.
