Sporting fun at Easter festival

2016-03-03 06:00

THE beach is the place to be this Easter weekend.

Jeffreys Bay Tourism, in conjunction with the Kouga Municipality and Kouga Sports Council (KSC), is set to host a fun-filled beach festival from March 25 to March 28 - breathing new life into Jeffreys Bay over this holiday period.

“The festival will loosely resemble the Shell Festival of the olden days, but just on a much smaller scale to start off with,” says Jeffreys Bay Tourism chairperson Deon Freemantle.

For the sport-lovers there will be touches, vollyball, kids’ games and soccer.

Touch Rugby will take to the beach on March 25. The entry fee is R90 per team and prize money of up to R1 800 is up for grabs. For more information, phone 078 412 9667.

The Saturday will see volleyball teams battling it out on the sand. The entry fee is R20 per team and the winning team will walk away with R1 200. For more information, phone 083 441 1721.

Various kids’ games including dunk-a-cup, flag race and tug-of-war will be held on March 27. For more information, phone 082 824 3124.

On March 28, soccer teams will battle it out for a total prize money of R3 300. The entry fee is R90 per team. For more information, phone 083 870 3232.

Registration is from 08:00 to 09:00 and the captain’s briefing will be at 09:15. All the games start at 09:30 and ends at 15:00. The prize-giving is at 16:00.

The line-up will have something for everyone. Apart from all the sporting activities, food-lovers can enjoy a night market on March 25. For the children and those young at heart, there will be a fun treasure hunt and a sand castle competition.

There will also be a variety of stalls at the festival on March 26.

The festival will come to an end with a church service on the beach on the Sunday.

For more information or to book a stall, contact the Jeffreys Bay Tourism Office at 042 293 2923. Alternatively, send an email to info@jeffreysbaytourism.org.
