Theft out of motor vehicles on the increase

2016-06-23 06:00

MORE motorists in Jeffreys Bay are falling victim to criminals who pounce on their parked vehicles.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, there has been an increase in the theft out of motor vehicles in the area over the past few weeks.

“This can be due to owners not parking their vehicles in secured areas and not safeguarding valuable items,” says Swart. “We request the community to park their vehicles in a secure area and not to leave valuables in plain sight, but rather to take them inside their homes.”

In the latest reported incident, a Toyota Fortuner was broken into at Plane Street at 22:48 on June 16. Clothing and jewellery were taken from the vehicle, according to Swart.

A 31-year-old suspect was arrested shorty afterwards at 23:10 and appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrates Court on Monday, June 20.

Safety hints

  • Do not leave your vehicle unlocked when you are away from it, even for only a short period.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are secured before leaving the vehicle.
  • Do not leave your property (including loose change, shopping bags, etc) in plain view in your vehicle.
  • Take your valuables with you or secure them in the glove box or in the boot compartment.

Do not do this in the parking lot, as thieves could be monitoring the area.

  • Be on the lookout for someone who is acting suspiciously, and report it to the police.
  • Park your vehicle in the garage and do not leave it in the driveway or in front of your home.
  • Always remove radios and CDs if possible.
