KOUGA se politieke hoofde het hand-aan-hand met munisipale brandbestryders, Working on Fire, Longmore MTO en gemeenskappe gewerk toe ‘n weghol brand in Junie 2017 verwoesting gesaai het in die omgewing van Thornhill en Longmore.

Die brand het verwoesting gesaai oor amper 27 000 hektar, insluitende die Longmore-plantasie en plase. ‘n Bejaarde egpaar is ook tragies oorlede toe hulle op hulle plaas deur die vlamme vasgekeer is.

Inwoners van Longmore en nabyliggende plase moes ook op ‘n kol ontruim word en is by die Thornhill-gemeenskapsaal gehuisves. Die munisipaliteit se versoek vir donasies om geaffekteerde gemeenskappe te help en brandbestryders te help voed, het hulp van regoor die land sien instroom.

Alhoewel die Longmore-gemeenskap se huise gered kon word, was hulle vir ‘n ge- ruime tyd sonder elektrisiteit of water weens brandskade aan die infrastruktuur. Die munisipaliteit het ‘n groot kragopwekker en tydelike toilette beskikbaar gestel aan die gemeenskap. Water is ook aangery.

Die Kouga-raad het op 12 Junie 2017 Kouga tot plaaslike rampsgebied verklaar ten einde meer hulp te kan bekom om die brandskade en impak op gemeenskappe aan te spreek.
