YOUNG and aspiring writers from twelve schools in the region recently secured themselves a visit to the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm with their unique writing skills.

Grade 1 to 3 learners from schools across Kouga took part in the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm’s renewable energy creative writing competition, called The Wind. The competition was launched in June this year.

Learners were incentivised through prizes that included books, equipment, science goods and even digital cameras. The Grade 3 winners visit the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm and learned about wind energy first hand.

“These learners are representative of the twelve local community schools, who put their weight behind Global Wind Day. The aim of the competition is to teach learners more about Renewable Energy, and in particular how energy is harvested from the abundant wind in this province,” says Marion Green-Thompson, Economic Development Manager for Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm.

Schools that participated in the competition are Chigwell Primary School, Gamtoos Valley Primary School, Graslaagte Primary School, Kruisfontein Primary School, Masisebenze Primary School, Mzingisi Primary School, Patensie Primary School, Quagga Primary School, St Patricks EC Primary School, Vukani Primary School, Weston Primary School and Sea Vista Primary School.

These schools form part of the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm’s Foundation Phase Reading Coach Support Programme, an initiative that has been developed in partnership with the Department of Education.
