2017 Entrepreneurs of the Year announced

FOLLOWING a gruelling judging process and assessment of 15 finalists, South Africa’s annual entrepreneurial competition, Entrepreneur of the Year, sponsored by Sanlam and Business/Partners, announced the six 2017 winners at an awards ceremony on Thursday in Johannesburg.

One of them is Pietermaritzburg’s Siphiwe Ngcobo, owner and founder of iLawu Hospitality Group, who Echo featured on August 24 when he was announced a finalist.

Ngcobo, who comes from Edendale, won the 2017 Job Creator of the Year title.
“The award is an indication of what the iLawu Hospitality Group stands for. It is further proof that the iLawu Hospitality Group strives to be the best employer in this industry. But most importantly, the success of the iLawu Hospitality Group is based on its employees, [for] they are the organisation’s foundation,” Ngcobo said.

His business began in 2009 as a small five-bedroomed B&B in Pietermaritzburg, which expanded into the iLawu Hospitality Group.

It is a well-recognised hospitality and catering brand in KZN and provides many jobs for the community.

The competition spokesperson, Christo Botes, says selecting the overall winner was not easy, especially given the high standard of the finalists.

Now in its 29th year, the Entrepreneur of the Year. competition provides prizes worth R2 million.

Each of the five category winners received R60 000, the overall winner received R160 000 towards growing their businesses.

Botes says that each winner will also receive mentorship support, networking opportunities and associated marketing and national media exposure to drive their business success.
