THE Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown will on Sunday welcome the Amandla Freedom Ensemble to its stage. The musicians predict their “performance at the Rainbow will essentially be the Magnum Opus of our tour”.

The Amandla FreedomEnsemble highlights the compositional material of bandleader Mandla Mlangeni (trumpet) and executed by Clement Benny (drums), Gontse Makhene (percussion), Ariel Zamonsky (bass) and Oscar Rachabane (tenor saxophones).

“Mlangeni’s Amandla quintet wraps elliptical melodies in three-part horn harmonies, rich with impasto, swinging like broken chandeliers. The Soweto native’s compositions pull from church hymns, traditional rituals learnt from his uncle, a sangoma, or healer, American post-bop, the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the interwoven cycles of Eastern Cape music,” says Jazz Times.

Tickets, available now, cost R60. Doors open at 1pm. For further information go to www.webtickets.co.za – Supplied
