Anti-Heritage Day tendency bemoaned by mayor

MSUNDUZI Mayor Chris Ndlela has slated a tendency by some people to turn Heritage Day, on 24 September, into what they call “National Braai Day”.

At a recent council Executive committee meeting Ndlela highlighted the Ghandi Peace Walk that is held to honour Mahatma Ghandi as one of the examples of things that should be happening on this day.

“Heritage Month is to honour the legacy of our heroes and heroines and the role they played in developing the foundation uniting around one common goal and understanding each other’s cultures and backgrounds.”

The day was known as Shaka Day before 1994, but after the new democratic order it was named Heritage Day for South Africans to celebrate their cultural and traditional diversity.

“Heritage Day is supposed to be a celebration of our history and as a reminder of where we are coming from rather than having a meaningless braai with people who don’t know anything about culture.

“Knowing where one comes from is the initial core of where one is going. Our roots are based on morals and values and without them we are nothing in this world we live in today.”

He said the day means a lot to South Africans and cannot be changed to suit people’s agendas.

“A lot of young women in our country used to take part in the Zulu Royal Reed dance - Umkhosi Womhlanga - but now this has changed, the reason being is that the media has a major influence on society,” he said
