WHEN Netcare St Anne’s Hospital opened its doors 25 years ago, in 1990, it was a modestly sized hospital with just 88 beds.

Since then the hospital has become as much a part of the city.

“It has always been one of Netcare St Anne’s Hospital’s goals to make outstanding private health care more accessible to the community. I think we have been able to achieve this through the 25 years of our existence as a Netcare hospital and, after recent upgrades to the facility, we are ready to continue to provide our own personal brand of service to patients for another two decades or more,” said hospital manager, Louis Joubert.

Now with over 200 beds and eight theatres, the hospital offers a complete range of medical services and has comprehensive service offerings. South Africa’s leading doctors and specialists are supported at the hospital by highly skilled nursing staff and a team of allied health and administrative personnel.

Some of the specialities for which the hospital is best known include cardiology, general surgery, ENT surgery, neurology, neuro-surgery, oncology, dermatology, maxillo-facial surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, urology and psychiatry. A radiotherapy service meanwhile, employs a cutting-edge linear accelerator for the treatment of certain cancers.

The hospital has also become known for its world-class, level one accident and emergency unit which has just been upgraded.

“We have become known for the high level of care we provide children and their parents. Some of our staff have helped deliver two or three generations of children in the same family.

“This shows the great level of trust that is placed in the maternity unit by the parents of the community,” said Joubert.

Netcare St Anne’s Hospital has one of the best-known paediatric facilities in Pietermaritzburg and enjoys a high demand for its services. The paediatric ward was upgraded recently and is now a spacious 15-bed facility with a separate playroom and a lounge for parents.

The hospital offers a range of ancillary services to its patients said Joubert. These include diabetic counselling, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietician, wound and stoma care and clinical psychology.

“We really do cover all the health-care bases,” he said.

Joubert said that Netcare St Anne’s Hospital places a great emphasis on staff training and on providing an environment in which its people can develop and grow. The staff are dedicated and involved, and always place their patients first. It is a recipe for success, the hospital having won awards for its high levels of service.

“Those who are looking for a health-care facility that will provide them with warm service, which at the same time is highly efficient and backed up by state-of-the art equipment, need not look further than the Netcare St Anne’s Hospital. Our facility will meet your every health-care need right here in Pietermaritzburg.

“The staff and management at Netcare St Anne’s Hospital are humbled to have reached this, our 25th anniversary. We regard this as an important milestone and would like to once again thank the community for making it possible through their support over the years. We commit ourselves to continuing to provide you with the best health-care services we possibly can,” said Joubert
