FOR the first time this year, the historic Nelson Mandela Marathon will include a triathlon where participants will compete in swimming, cycling and trail running.

The race, which takes place between Imbali and the Howick Capture Site, is scheduled for 30 August. Speaking at a media launch for the race Umgungundlovu district Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said the marathon is expected to draw about 13 000 athletes, which is a vast improvement since its inception three years ago.

“We have three races for people of all ages since Mandela was an iconic for everyone. We have a 42.2km race, a 21.2km race and a 10km race and we will also have a 4664 walk for young people who will also honour the struggle icon. Other than trail running and mountain biking, we have introduced a triathlon for the first time. The Mandela race is one of the most difficult races as it symbolises the trials and tribulations our former late president endured. Not only will it be about honouring his life, we also hope it will boost our tourism industry with a series of events scheduled for 29 and 30 August.”

President of KZN Cycling Greg Stedman said this is the second time that cycling will be involved as they have a strategic plan to take cycling to all the districts in the province.

Damien Bradley of Triathlon said the triathlon, which consists of a mini-triathlon which is a 200m, 5km cycle and a 2.5km run, a sprint triathlon which is a 600m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run and an Olympic distance race which consists of a 1.5km swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run will take place at Midmar dam.

Race director Johan van Staden said they are working hard to ensure that everything is ready by August as this is one of the fastest growing races. Trail running, mountain biking, triathlon and the youth walk will take place a day before the race
