Maritzburg College dominate SA sprint champs

MARITZBURG College are again the top senior boys’ canoe school after dominating the 2015 South African Schools Canoe Sprint Championships.

More than 100 schools from around the country gathered for three days at Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria where canoeists competed in four distances - 5 000m, 1 000m, 500m and 200m events.

Competition was intense as the elite paddlers went head to head in some closely fought events. One of the surprises of the event was Brandon Orpwood from Maritzburg College who had arrived back from Brazil where he competed in the World Junior Canoe Slalom. Brandon and his partner Jarryd Gibson, also from Maritzburg College, won the K2 500m and 200m finals much to the surprise of many competitors.

Jarryd was awarded the victor laudorum at the end of the championships. Jarryd is now the top U18 canoe sprinter in South Africa having also won the South African and KZN Canoe Sprint Championships.

Conditions on the first day became very difficult. Strong gusting wind made the boats very twitchy and a swim would mean the end of a paddlers challenge for the title. The conditions on days two and three were perfect and excellent times were posted. Epworth also easily retained their title as the top girls school with Donna Hutton being awarded the victrix laudorum­
