New by-law for burials, cremations

2015-06-17 06:00

NEW and amended by-laws were passed on burials and cremations in the city in a recent executive council meeting at city hall.

Chairperson of the meeting Mayor Chris Ndlela said the cemetery and crematorium by-laws were outdated and needed to be redrafted.

After they were advertised for public comment, the amended by-laws include that:

• No persons under the age of 12 may enter the cemetery unless under adult supervision.

• No person shall ride any animal, motor cycle or cycle within the cemetery unless permitted by council.

• No animal may be slaughtered on the cemetery premises regardless of any religious ceremony.

The amendments also address grave measurements and the hours of cremation that will only be done between 8 am and 7 pm.

Any corpse that contains a cardiac pacemaker or radioactive implant of any kind or any other material that may result in an explosive or harmful emissions when incinerated may not be cremated unless it is removed.

The by-laws state that when cremated, a corpse must be contained within a coffin and the coffin must be made of wood or other non-toxic material
