New police commissioner must come from rank and file

2015-11-04 06:00

THIRTY-FOUR miners were allegedly killed by police officers during a strike at the Marikana mine in 2012. Someone had to take the fall.

National police commissioner, you have been forewarned that there will be consequences and that you will be held vicariously liable for the actions of SAPS members as head of the police institution.

After a litany of issues, such as the crime situation in SA, and the release of the crime statistics, to name but a few, your suspension is inevitable.

It is unlikely that she will survive the board of inquiry into her fitness to remain in the SAPS. Furthermore, those who appointed her have now forsaken her. My opinion is that the president and his legal advisers would have studied the circumstances with a fine-toothed comb before issuing the suspension order.

I urge the president to dispense with this issue without further ado.

I trust that the appointment of a new police commissioner to head our 200 000-strong police service will come from the rank and file. Someone with at least 20 years’ experience.

My former colleague, the ingenious Lieutenant General Vinesh Monoo, who hails from Soweto and is now at head office, is a most eligible candidate, in my opinion.
