PIETERMARITZBURG’S Pierre Buckley from the Gay and Lesbian Network (GLN) has been selected to be part of the One Young World (OYW) summit in Bangkok, Thailand from 18 to 21 November.

OYW is based in the United Kingdom and is a non-profit organisation that gathers together young people from all around the world and helps them to make lasting connections to create positive change in their communities and throughout the world.

Buckley said he was looking forward to the summit specifically to connect with like-minded people from around the world to work with them to inspire change.

He has a diploma in public relations and is studying a Bachelor of Arts in politics and communications. He works at the Gay and Lesbian Network in Pietermaritzburg as the sexual and reproductive health consultant.

His focus for the summit is health, human rights, leadership, peace and conflict and youth unemployment.

“I am looking forward to meeting other people who have similar issues and then coming back with different ideas to help address social issues we currently face,” said Buckley.

Although he will be advocating for gay rights, this is not the main focus.

“My focus is to get people to see that we are all human first. I’m advocating for human rights for people in general regardless of their sexual orientation.”

An array of speakers will attend the summits around the world, including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Sir Richard Branson, Francois Pienaar and Ryk Neethling, to name a few.

Delegates who attend the summit will be known thereafter as OYW ambassadors and work on their own initiative or lend the power of the One Young World network to those initiatives already in existence.

Buckley is looking for sponsorships towards his trip. He needs to raise about R50 000, half of which has to be raised by the end of August. For those interested in finding out more or to donate, email Buckley at pierrebuckley@gmail.com or visit the OYW website www. oneyoungworld.com
