THIS year the 20 Grade 11 school girls, selected as semi-finalists for “A Young Lady with Heart 2015” will be united in a Community Chest project called “Open Your Heart and Fill the Chest”.

This campaign calls for schools to get behind their candidates and to support a drive for Mama Ntombi Community Projects (MNCP), a Chest beneficiary.

“While the campaign to find Maritzburg’s young ladies with heart is about rewarding the girls already making a difference in their community, we also see it as an opportunity to practice the qualities and values the campaign epitomises, so when we meet with the semi-finalists on 12 September, we will be sharing this special project with them,” said Ursuhla Govender.

“The objective of MNCP is to provide hope, practical support and encouragement to the many families facing hardship while at the same time teaching them skills to become self-reliant,”said Sandra Pillay of MNCP.

Their work is aimed at mainly orphaned and neglected children.

Finalists will be encouraged to source the following basic food items - non-perishable food, stationery for the pre-school (jumbo colouring books and crayon, A4 photocopying paper), children’s books (suitable for ages one to five), new or good second-hand and children’s clothes (ages one to 12, boys and girls).

On Heritage Day, 24 September, the girls will visit an area they have collected for on behalf of MNCP where they will serve the community at a breakfast club for 300 children.

The community is encouraged to be a part of the fund-raising and contact the organisation to make donations.

For more information about MNCP, contact Pillay at 033 342 6525 or campaign administrators Lara Edmonds at 084 587 0880 or Govender at 083 611 7733. - Supplied
