A PIETERMARITZBURG beauty has made it to the semi-finals of the Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa competition and is now KZN’s last hope for pageant success.

Seventeen-year-old Sarah Andrew, already active in charity work, was inspired by witnessing South Africa’s Rolene Strauss become Miss World last year.

“I wanted to enter a pageant that focused on charity and where I could be an ambassador for change.

“I had no idea when I first entered that I would make it as a semi-finalist, but I am so excited.”

Sarah, a correspondence student, works with Tabitha Ministries, which focuses on orphaned children.

She said her next Miss Teen workshop is on 11 April when she will fly to Johannesburg to meet the 50 remaining contestants.

She has a special place in her heart for children and loves helping them in any way she can.

The teen said her passion for helping people is what sets her apart from the other contestants and bringing the Miss Teen Commonwealth title to Pietermaritzburg would be “an honour”.

South African women will compete for three crowns - namely Miss Teen, Miss and Mrs Commonwealth. Miss Teen is open to girls aged 16 to 19.

Title holders are expected to get involved in charitable causes and uphold the values of the commonwealth such as racial harmony, poverty eradication and cultural cohesion.

The winners can compete in the Miss Commonwealth International in London annually
