Power-cutting exercise on track, says city

THE project initiated by Pietermaritzburg’s business sector to cut electricity consumption and prevent future load shedding remains on track.

The project, a partnership between the PMB Chamber of Business and Msunduzi Municipality , involved a trial three weeks ago when businesses were asked to cut their electricity usage by up to 15% for three hours.

The aim was to determine if the electricity savings were enough to be able to offset a Phase 2 load-shedding event.

If the trial was successful, the sector aims to cut its consumption ahead of future load-shedding events, thus preventing load shedding from taking place altogether.

Businesses account for 70% of electricity consumption in the city.

The municipality and PCB said that Eskom was still in the process of correlating data obtained from the electricity curtailment trial.

“The report is still to be finalised, but we will let you know of the outcome,” said a statement from the municipality
