Pressure on for new city burial space

2015-10-22 06:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality wants to acquire 10 hectares for burial space at Ethembeni Memorial Park.

Addressing the Executive Committee (Exco) meeting, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that the land at Ethembeni will be acquired using funds that were given to the municipality by the Department of Human Settlements.

“In view of the shortage of burial space we are recommending that the economic development business unit engage with the Department of Human Settlements requesting permission to allow the Msunduzi Municipality to utilise 10 hectares for burial space at Ethembeni Memorial Park, which already has an approved environmental authorisation,” he said.

The establishment of a cemetery at Hollingwood received an environmental authorisation from the Department of Environmental Affairs in 2008, and subject to the compliance with the conditions of establishment specified in the environmental authorisation document, burial could commence at the Hollingwood site within a short time.

Currently there are six closed cemeteries, and only two, Mountain Rise and Willowfountain, are operational.

The report presented at Exco about the burial space shortages states that in 1996 council was advised that there would be lack of burial space by 2010 and there was a need to identify land for a new cemetery
