JAQUES van Heerden and Moira Filmer completed their climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and raised more than R25 000 for the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc).

The pair said the climb was humbling and emotionally challenging.

“The hardest part was the last night when we ascended to the peak. The view on the top of the volcanic crater and glaziers was phenomenal, getting to the top was so emotional, I just cried,” said Filmer.

Van Heerden said that reaching the top of the mountain made him feel grateful about his life.

“The team work during the climb between our group reminded me how thankful I am for the people who are in my life, most of all Moira, who motivated me during our preparations and being present. Just as our support structures provide inspiration in our daily lives, so too can we be the example for others because every second counted on the mountain the message was clear, be present in every aspect of your life now, love people now, be inspiring now,” he said.

Van Heerden and Filmer said the people who motivated them to climb the mountain were ever present during the trip.

“We took pictures of our dads to the top. They both died of cancer and we were climbing for Choc. I felt so close to him and thought of the hardships he had to endure trying to fight cancer. It was an incredibly spiritual experience and I feel as if my heart has gotten bigger through this experience,” said Filmer.

Van Heerden said the journey has made him appreciate the present and not focus on what is going to happen next.

“By doing the best every day we might be to the larger picture of life. I was reminded that we all have unique qualities that shine the light of the world, and that is what we should focus on,” said Van Heerden
