NONTUTHUKO Mashimane will be dedicating her first Comrades Marathon run to the Pietermaritzburg and District Community Chest.

Mashimane, who matriculated from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School in 2000, said she has always led an active and healthy lifestyle and has been a social runner for many years.

Nutrition consultant by profession, Mashimane said she dreamt of running the Comrades, but picked up an injury and was told she would not be able to run again however, through perseverance and the dream to one day participate in the Comrades, she worked through her injury and has since competed in four marathons.

“Rather than running the Comrades for myself I decided to do it so people can gain something from my experience. I chose the Community Chest because it is linked to many local charities.”

Mashimane, is the younger sister of Sibonelo “Sibs” Mashimane, who she said was her inspiration to participate in the Comrades. Mashimane has already raised over R7 000.

“Doing it for charity and raising money helps me do what I love and get people involved to help those who are less fortunate,” she said.

“I encourage others to live healthily and realise that running is a gift that can unlock potential in them. There are always challenges in life, but through hard work and determination I overcame mine.

“All people need to do is to believe in themselves.”
