School celebrates 125 years

LONGMARKET Girls’ School will be celebrating their 125th anniversary this week, and will start festivities with a walk to the site of the old school on Friday, 31 July.

On Friday at 8.30am, the procession will be led into Bulwer Street by two pipers (to be confirmed). They will cross over Boshoff Street toward Merchiston, cross over Bulwer street and proceed up Boshoff Street.

Pupils and staff will walk up Boshoff­ Street using the left-hand lane and cross the following roads: Prince Alfred Street, Burger Street and Jabo Ndlovu into the Msunduzi Museum grounds.

There will be a thanks-giving service before the procession returns on the same route, but in the opposite direction, at about 10am.

After returning to school at 11am there will be a releasing of pigeons and at 2pm, the current school, old pupils and staff will have a tea party.

On Saturday 1 August at 10am, there will be an old school staff and pupils tea party and at 12.30pm there will be a current school family braai and entertainment.
