Senior players must step up under new coach

EXPERIENCED playmaker Kurt Lentjies says it is up to Maritzburg United’s senior players to turn their season around under new coach Clive Barker.

The Team of Choice are propping up the Absa Premiership standings with a point from six games, while they exited the MTN8 Cup at the first hurdle. Maritzburg’s woes led to the sacking of coach Mandla Ncikazi, who has since linked up with Amajimbos for the upcoming U17 World Cup in Chile.

United recently hired 1996 Afcon winner Barker as Ncikazi’s replacement.

“You can only point one finger and that’s towards the senior players, because we are there to motivate the younger guys,” Lentjies told the club’s website.

“They are new in the game, they don’t know what it’s like. It’s up to us to stay positive and just to work together and to motivate the younger guys. We draw our energy from them, and vice versa.

“We started badly and I feel in some games we were very unlucky. In some games small things turned it against us. If I can pin-point one game, I think its only the [Bidvest] Wits game away from home where we have played badly. The other games I think we’ve played fairly well. We’ve addressed what needs to be fixed.”

The former SuperSport United man added of Barker: “There’s no introduction needed. He’s achieved some amazing things in football, so let’s hope he can achieve things here with this bunch of guys as well. We want to make him feel settled in as soon as possible.” –
