THE recent long Fifa and PSL break is a blessing in disguise for Maritzburg United, however, many United followers may think that the break could halt the current winning momentum after a 1-0 win over Jomo Cosmos during the Telkom Knockout fixture a fortnight ago at Harry Gwala Stadium.

According to the local PSL outfit, they will have a fair chance to work on their players, especially the new head coach Clive Barker, who can work on getting used to them.

The Team of Choice will play their next league fixture on 21 October against Chippa United at Harry Gwala Stadium at 7.30pm.

United’s communications manager, Brian Zuma, said the break is a blessing because his technical team, especially the head coach, now have ample time to work with the players and there are a couple of friendlies arranged to keep players sharp, fit and focused.

“We welcome the break and are looking at it positively. We believe the coach will have enough time to drill the team and make his players get used to his methods,” said Zuma.

Barker recently indicated that he is likely to bring in a couple of new faces to bolster the side.

“The current crop of players is very committed, dedicated and capable players, but we also need to add a few players in certain departments in order to make the team strong and well balanced,” said Barker.

Barker says their next fixture against the Eastern Cape visitors won’t be a stroll in the park.

“Remember Chippa United brought in a handful of experienced and skilful players, such Mark Manyambela and others. They are looking good and capable of turning the tables against any side in the PSL.

“We are very happy that we will be playing them in front of our home fans and our 12th player will make the visitors feel the pressure.”

After the Team of Choice lost their highly rated head coach Steve Komphela to the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, Mandla Ncikazi took over, but found it tough to settle down and failed to earn maximum points.

Barker says his aim is to ensure that United move away from the relegation zone and is expected to use the next open window period, January, to the fullest.
