Will of the people is paramount

ALTHOUGH not from Ward 30, I attended the well advertised feedback meeting at Truro Hall on 23 September because councillor Singh also helps those not from his ward.

The ANC councillor in Ward 35 never holds feedback meetings in the Mountain Rise, Willowton East area, although some of the highest rated properties and/or factories fall in her ward.

One of the items on the agenda was the election of ward committee members.

It was shocking to hear the representative from the speaker’s office stipulate that only two out of 10 members could be elected, providing no reason as to why the others could not.

When questioned from the floor, his evasive excuses were not accepted, leading to his frustration and his eventual walking out of the meeting in the most undignified manner.

What was puzzling to those in the house is since when can the speaker’s office dictate how many ward committee members can, or cannot, be elected?

In a democracy the will of the people is paramount.

Compliant appointees who dance to the tunes of their iolitical masters is unacceptable.

Ten members were nevertheless elected, and Ward 30 ratepayers await the reaction from the office of the speaker.

It was unfortunate that other serious items on the agenda could not be discussed.
