‘Without jobs, PMB is at risk of revolt’

THE Pietermaritzburg CBD will not become a ghost town when the new parliamentary precinct is built, says Msunduzi Municipality city manager Mxolisi Nkosi.

Nkosi was addressing questions from delegates about the impact of the proposed precinct during the Msunduzi investor conference.

It has been reported previously that the precinct, which was to be constructed on land near the Townhill Hospital, was expected to have cost the legislature in the region of R800 million when completed.

The project was shelved a few years ago due to a shortage of funds and it is not clear when it will be resuscitated.

There have been concerns that once complete, civil servants will move into this precinct, leaving offices currently occupied by the government departments vacant.

“I have been assured by the legislature that the move of the offices will not turn the CBD into a ghost town,” said Nkosi.

He said the current government offices will be used as district offices.

Nkosi also lamented the poor communication between his administration and the provincial leadership.

Clive Coetzee, the general manager for Infrastructure Management and Economic Services for KwaZulu-Natal Treasury, assured delegates and investors that the city centre will not be abandoned. He said there was a shortage of space in PMB and that there were thousands of government workers that are based in Durban that needed to be moved to Pietermaritzburg
