THE world’s best known fairy tales get a – very adult – make-over in the festive froth and frolics that is Once Upon A Fairy (Not the Adult Panto).

Written and directed by Thomie Holtzhausen, with music arrangement by Jaziel Vaugh’ann, the show began on 17 November until 15 January, 2017 at Altitude, 25 Silver Avenue, Durban.

“For 19 years, Durban has been entertained by the adult panto team,” says Holtzhausen, “but in an unexpected turn of events the 20th year has been cancelled.

“Rather than disappoint fans of the annual ‘naughty but nice’ show, we decided to stage Once Upon A Fairy (Not the Adult Panto). Pencils were sharpened, old costumes dusted off and a fresh new concept was born to ensure Durban audiences will be in stiches once again.”

Once Upon A Fairy draws on everything from Snow White to Cinderella, to deliver a production full of double entendre, well-known songs, jokes, and a plot that’s not difficult to follow — just don’t bring the children.

“Yes, boys and girls, this year’s adult panto takes us away from Neverland to Nkandla,” says Holtzhausen. “The Evil Queen is holding onto power and tries her utmost best to prevent the wedding of the century. There are probes into alleged personal gain, sex scandals and true fairy-tale happily ever after moments.

“The show will shed light on the global economic crisis, strike action, the ash cloud that prevents us going on that annual holiday and the influx of Christmas shoppers in every mall in the city.

“So, escape from reality, have fun and just let go.”

Once Upon A Fairy stars Vaugh’ann as the evil ruler, TQ Zondi as the energetic heir and Prince; Kerry Lee McKibben as Princess Cindi Spitz; and Holtzhausen in an array of roles.

The show is being staged at 7.30pm, from Tuesday to Saturday.

Patrons can bring along a picnic basket (excluding drinks) or pre-order a variety of snack baskets from the Skyy Café next door.

There is plenty of secure parking. The venue is easily accessible from Umgeni and Stamford Hill Roads; and patrons who want to prolong their night out will be able to enjoy the after show bar and dance floor.

Tickets for this festive season treat are R140.
