MORE than 3.5 million South Africans have been diagnosed with diabetes. Another estimated five million are walking around undiagnosed.

You are called into the doctors rooms after some blood tests because you have been feeling generally tired, very thirsty, and have just not been feeling well. You are told you have diabetes, given some medication you go home, bewildered and unsure what to do next, except follow your doctor’s advice.

Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce enough or properly respond to insulin and you are unable to process the sugar in your blood properly. This leaves you feeling tired and unwell.

There is no such thing as a touch of diabetes. It is known as the silent killer because without proper management it can result in very serious health issues. With the correct education on managing it, good health can be maintained.

Diabetes sometimes shows no symptoms, but the following are things which have been found to put you more at risk of developing the condition.

• Family history of diabetes.

• Overweight.

• Unhealthy diet.

• Physical inactivity.

• Increasing age.

• High blood pressure.

• Ethnicity – Indian population are more at risk.

• Insulin resistance.

• Diabetes in pregnancy.

If you have diabetes it is important to see a diabetes specialist to learn more about managing it and staying healthy. I will work with your doctor to ensure you understand your diabetes better.
