African states have lost sovereignty

2016-06-29 06:00

COLONIALISM is back in full swing in Africa. African states have lost their sovereignty.

African presidents no longer have the power to rule their countries, as international rating agencies are the ones that call the shots.

They dictate who should be appointed finance ministers in African states. This is sad because this freedom was obtained through the shedding of blood.

These colonialists are now using underhanded means to control Africa.

The continent is being held to ransom by the West because our leaders fail to show strong leadership from the word go.

African leaders are to blame for this mess. When they gained independence, they failed to implement economic policies that would have made African states independent economically. They embarked on civil wars which destroyed infrastructure. The stories of Angola and Mozambique are cases in point.

Although Angola has oil in abundance, many people live in abject poverty, while only a few elite have benefited.

Our leaders cling to power for a long time and there is no room for new ideas and progressive leaders. Those who come up with fresh ideas are assassinated or jailed.

Africa needs to wake up and elect good leaders who will stop this rot. Colonialism was bad and we cannot afford to experience it again.
