THE majority of soccer pundits, especially Maritzburg United die hards and City of Choice residents, believe the new head coach Fadlu Davids is the perfect person to take the PSL outfit to great heights

Davids was officially appointed by the Team of Choice management last week.

The former Team of Choice captain appointment was not only overdue, his credentials and commitment to the team totally qualifies him for the job.

His true name is Fadluraghman “Fadlu” Davids.

He was born on May 21, 1981 in Cape Town.

He officially retired from playing in 2012, and last played for United.

In his career, Davids displayed outstanding passion, commitment on and off the field.

He was twice the highest goalscorer in the National First Division.

Since 2012, Davids has served as assistant coach to Ernst Middendorp (PMB United).

When Middendorp left United in 2016, Davids was named the interim coach for a third time in his career.

His brother, Maahier, was named his assistant.

He also served as Roger De Sa’s assistant only to reclaim his position as interim coach after Da Sa’s resignation after seven games.

He is known for believing in youngsters and to unearth unknown talent.

Young United players such Siphesihle Ndlovu‚ Bandile Shandu and Mlondi Dlamini were only able to taste the first-team starting lineup when Davids was in charge.

Davids became a Maritzburg United player in 2007.

He is also a well travelled and experienced player and previously played for Silver Stars, Vasco Da Gama, Manning Rangers, Santos Cape Town, Chernomorets Burgas (Bulgaria), Avendale Athletico and Mother City.

Besides having an UEFA B coaching licence, Davids is also armed with a handful of Safa coaches qualifications.

One of the regular faces at United games and long serving Sobantu supporter, Vuyo Mkhize, believes that United’s management made a wise decision by officially appointing Davids head coach.

“In Davids we believe and he will take our team to dizzying heights,” said Mkhize.
