PIETERMARITZBURG based fans of Mondli Cele, Maritzburg United and football in general will have a chance to bid farewell to their fallen hero at a memorial service arranged for them today.

Maritzburg United have confirmed that this weekend KwaZulu-Natal derby against Golden Arrows has been postponed in the wake of the death of midfielder.

Cele’s memorial will be at Life Bible Church International (kwa-Rev Manyathi) at 1 Archie Gumede

Drive, Pietermaritzburg (opposite old Simba Chips) at 5pm today before his funeral service in Durban on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Cele died in a car accident on Sunday morning, and with the club in mourning, a special request to postpone their fixture this weekend, as well as that of their reserve league side, has been granted.

“The Absa Premiership fixture between Maritzburg United and Lamontville Golden Arrows, as well as the Multichoice Diski fixture between Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town, which were both scheduled for 23 January, have been postponed until further notice,” read a statement released by the club, who then thanked all who have shown their support in this difficult time.

“Maritzburg United FC wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the messages of support and condolences we and the Cele family have received since the tragic passing of our beloved Mondli last Sunday morning.”

Delisile Ngwenya, who was in the car with Cele, was also killed in the accident, with the club conveying their condolences to her relatives and friends.

“The club would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the Ngwenya family and friends, for the loss of their daughter who passed away in the same accident with Mondli,” the statement read.

“Delisile Ngwenya worked very closely with the club, as she was assigned to serve Maritzburg United for the SABC Sekunjalo soccer programme. She worked very diligently in serving the club through the SABC. May her soul rest in peace.”

His funeral service will take place at Durban’s Folweni sport ground (near Isipingo) on Saturday at 9am.
