THE South African Veterinary Foundation (SAVF) old-age home in Pietermaritzburg was filled with happiness on Friday as they celebrated the 100th birthday of one of their residents.

Ntombifuthi Ntuli, originally from Greytown, came to live at SAVF two years ago, after the death of her family members. Speaking at the celebration Ntombifuthi said she is very grateful to have found a new home with new brothers and sisters

“ I have no one. No brother, no sister, but I have found new brothers and sisters here. I am very grateful to God for loving me and keeping me.

“Thank you all for coming to celebrate this day with me. I don’t even know what to say, but thank you God. You are all my brothers and sisters now.”

Ntombifuthi still has a good memory and takes good care of herself.

She spoke to the Fever about her childhood and said she left school in Standard 5, and loved singing.

“I left school because my parents could not afford my school fees. I was a domestic worker for many years before coming here [Maritzburg]. I was married with two children, but they both died and my husband also died. I was left with no one until they brought me here.”

When it comes to hobbies Ntombifuthi said she loves singing.

“I was a singer in my time. I still love to sing, but I am too old now,” she said.

She said she doesn’t care how many years she has left as long as she is alive she is happy.

“I know many people die at a young age, but to me being 100 means nothing - as long as I am alive I am happy. I don’t even have a strict diet. I am healthy. I still want to live for many years after this.”
