FOLLOWING the suspension of 12 pupils and the expulsion of 21 others for various violations of the school code of conduct, including theft, vandalism, bullying, drug possession and disrespecting teachers, the Thornhill Christian College held a prayer meeting recently.

The meeting was attended by school staff, pupils and parents, the school governing body and Department of Education officials.

Principal J. Ncube spoke about the importance of discipline.

He reminded pupils that the school is founded on the biblical teaching which says, “train up a child in the way s/he should go, and when s/he is old, s/he will not depart from it” - Proverbs chapter 22 verse 6.

DoE officials advised pupils that education is the cornerstone for building families and communities and advised them to respect their parents, teachers and peers and desist from sexual activities and alcohol and drug consumption.

According to the school management team, CCTV cameras are used in every classroom and the footage is used during disciplinary proceedings when pupils deny charges levelled against them.

The management team said a security company has been hired to inspect pupils’ bags and keep guard at the school entrance and premises to foster an environment of discipline, which has made a big difference because teachers have reported improvement in pupils’ conduct.

The director of the school thanked teachers and the school disciplinary committee for the upkeep of the institution.
