Comrades Outdoor Gym handed over to municipality

COMRADES Marathon Association (CMA) officially handed over its corporate social investment project, the Comrades Outdoor Gym to the Msunduzi Municipality last week.

The gym was initiated by the CMA to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community and create conditions for Pietermaritzburg’s citizens to become active in sport and outdoor activities.

Having been installed in the new Alexandra Park athletics precinct, the gym forms part of the new promenade that is built between the Harry Gwala Stadium and the new IAAF accredited athletics stadium.

The gym is a green facility and does not require electricity or water. It consists of 14 individual stations, each of which is designed to work a different set of muscles and aimed at developing different aspects of fitness namely strength, flexibility, mobility, cardio, balance and coordination. The gym equipment are driven by the user’s body weight during an exercise routine.

“The aim of the initiative is for the Pietermaritzburg community to benefit in terms of becoming a sporty, active and healthy society.

“Pietermaritzburg has the special distinction of being the birthplace of the Comrades Marathon and it is also our home. It is where the Comrades Marathon story began, was nurtured through its infancy, at times barely kept alive and gradually prospered. Many of us locals are privileged to have a special attachment to this race,” said CMA vice chairperson, Cheryl Winn.

Speaker of the Msunduzi Municipality, Councillor Babu Baijoo accepted the gym on behalf of the municipality. The implementation of the outdoor gym forms part of the 90th celebrations of the Comrades Marathon. The iconic event is recognised as the oldest, largest and greatest ultra-marathon in the world, as well as one of the most significant and inclusive sporting events in South Africa. Over the years, the CMA has taken its corporate social responsibilities very seriously by doing more for the greater good of society and contributing towards the welfare and interests of the community in which it operates, as well as towards the sport of athletics.

“We are very mindful that charity begins at home and it is therefore appropriate that as part of our 90th Comrades celebrations, and in particular during the season of giving, that we are handing over a gift to the community of Pietermaritzburg. The gift we have chosen to hand over today is the gift of fitness, health, exercise and fresh air. We are handing over this outdoor gym to the people of Pietermaritzburg with a view of promoting community participation in an active and healthy lifestyle, improving their quality of life and generally encouraging accessible exercise for the masses, especially those who cannot afford commercial gyms,’ said CMA general manager, Chris Fisher. - Supplied.
