IN my country South Africa there is a shack land called a democracy. Theoretically speaking democracy is a beautiful concept “for the people, by the people”, but the truth is democracy maintains Western domination over Africa.

Democracy is a Western solution and fails drastically to solve African problems because it does not have the same meaning in Africa as it does in Western countries simply because Africa faces more challenges than any other continent. Democracy forces Africans to conform to international standards and norms. In a democratic state politicians only serve the interest of those with money and our country is a good example of this, the system is exploitative and pushes capitalistic agenda’s of liberals. So instead of democracy bringing progress it comes with some regress of its own as we have moved from a race struggle to a class struggle.

Democracy is designed to economically enslave Africa, it is a trap for Africans to always be economically dependent on the “international system” which is controlled and operated by non-African states that occupy the hegemonic positions. Before imperialism Africa had an unnamed system of government which operated under the authority of chieftains, the system was characterised by African values that were designed by Africans, values such as Ubuntu, respect, for one person to be wealthy didn’t necessarily require that the next person be poor. The irony of democracy is that it offers no freedom whatsoever, neo-fascist institutions like the parliament are not progressive. The idea of freedom is very much Africa and democracy isn’t and we shouldn’t confuse the two, we were mesmerised by elections, we forgot democracy. The solution is neither capitalism nor socialism, but rather Africanism, it is time for Africans to adapt a system that speaks to Africans. It is senseless for us to adopt aristocracy simply because it is functional in England, for the same reason why the Truth and Reconciliation Committee failed to launch in the Congo and Kenya, but only works in South Africa. No system of government can be imported, it must come from the ground.
