Congress of the People aims for two wards

2016-04-27 06:00

THE dwindling Congress of the People (Cope) party is confident it will snatch two wards in Pietermaritzburg in the upcoming 2016 municipal government elections.

Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, Cope’s acting chairperson in the Umgungundlovu district Dumo Shange said they have enough supporters to back the party at the municipal elections.

He said they have more than 2 800 signed members, and some are in Sweetwaters, Imbali, Ashdown and Edendale.

On a local front, the party is eyeing Masukwana, Copesville, Haniville, Edendale, Shayamoya, Taylor’s Halt, Mshwathi, Ashdown, Dambuza, KwaPata and Machibisa areas.

“The party has 11 people who are contesting to be ward councillors. We are confident we will win two wards. There are more people who itch to sign up with Cope because of the m embattlements within the ruling party.

“Cope was formed by former members of the ANC so we are expecting our membership to grow.”

When asked if the party will still be relevant in 10 years, Shange said: “In 10 years’ time we will be a lot stronger because there is a lot of discontentment within the ANC.

“It is best we make it clear that we are not an anti-ANC movement though,” said Shange, adding that their party leader Mosiuoa Lekota is expected to visit Pietermaritzburg, however the date is yet to be confirmed.
