Events planned to boost city’s tourism

2016-08-31 06:00

IN a bid to grow the city’s economy, Msunduzi Municipality has identified that hosting a range of events is one of the key strategies in increasing tourist volume and creating short-term employment.

The city recently hosted the Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival and will, at the end of the month, host what has become one of the biggest races on the sporting calendar – the Nelson Mandela Day Marathon.

The 42.2km race, in honour of Nelson Mandela, will be held on 28 August.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said these events boost the city’s economy and funding will be used for hosting and supporting these events.

“These events bring in a lot of money for Msunduzi because the city hosts dozens of tourists and athletes who stay in Msunduzi during the events, spending money, and in turn, boosting our economy.” said Madonda.

Madonda said the jazz festival was very successful.

“The event’s success was beyond expectations. We saw a huge increase in the number of patrons this year. The line-up was also good, given the fact that the weather was on our side this time.”

She said there are still a lot of events coming up from Msunduzi.

“We are not only talking about hosting music events, we want to continue being the ideal hosts for big sporting events as well.”
