PIETERMARITZBURG Amateur Music Society (Pams) with Eyesizwe Adult Choir and the Pietermartizburg City Orchestra, conducted by Nigel Fish, presents George Frideric Handel’s Messiah in Pietermaritzburg next month.

The annual performance of Messiah in Pietermaritzburg is eagerly awaited by many in KZN, including the large number who travel long distances to listen to the beautiful music.

Messiah’s moving text was drawn from the Bible by Charles Jennens, who after writing it, brought it to Handel to set to music.

It has been 275 years since Handel wrote the 260-page Messiah score in a period of 24 days in a blaze of inspiration.

This year Pams Choir is looking forward to singing Messiah with the Eyesizwe Adult Choir following an enjoyable concert together in September.

The Hilton Christian Fellowship Church has been welcoming in allowing the choirs to sing in their hall. This will be a good halfway for the audienc, many of whom come from Howick.

The choirs also look forward to having many members of the audience, who have never experienced Messiah, as was the case in 2014.

The orchestra will be The Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra (director Dr David Plank).

Matthew Arnold, a 19th century poet and cultural critic, said: “The grandeur of the work makes it immortal. We are left feeling that human nature persists, truth exists and life has meaning and purpose.”

Messiah is on November 20 at 2.30 pm at Hilton Christian Fellowship Church,3 Hilton College Road, opposite Grace College.
