Family of slain teacher concerned

THE family of the late Laduma High School Deputy Principal, Priscilla Mchunu, who was gunned down in front of Grade 12 pupils during a weekend extra class, says they are concerned with what they call a “lack of commitment by police authorities in investigating the murder of their loved one”.

The shooting took place at the school in kwaMpumuza on Saturday March 18 at 11am.

One family member, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of threats to their lives, said: “There have been no arrests made since her passing and no committed interest shown by the police who are handling the case.”

This person said it is them [family], who continuously ask at the police station for updates and progress on the case and the responses to their inquiries are “unsatisfactory”.

“Some family members have received rude and unsatisfactory communication from the investigating officer.

The last straw was when the investigating officer stated that ‘the family needs to relax and understand that cases like this sometimes never get resolved and they must just wait and stop putting unnecessary pressure on him’, which stressed and discouraged the family,” the family member said.

The family is worried that those behind Mchunu’s murder are still at large, although it was committed in full view of an entire class.

“The family continues to seek assistance from authorities to find justice,” the family said.

According to the police Mchunu was gunned down by two suspects and sustained multiple wounds to her head. Police found 19 cartridges at the scene of the crime.
Plessislaer SAPS spokesperson, Captain Musa Ntombela confirmed that the police have not made any arrests, but said investigations are ongoing.

“If the family members are unhappy about everything concerning this matter they can come and see Brigadier Shezi and lay a formal complaint with him,” he said.
