MARITZBURG Fever reporter, Nicole John, has won the Consumer’s Choice Award at the Responsible Drinking Media Awards sponsored by Diageo.

In a grand event in Sandton, journalists from around the country met to find out who the winners were in various categories.

TV presenter, Leanne Manas, was the host for the evening and kept the audience entertained.

General Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister for Agriculture was the guest speaker and emphasised the importance of promoting responsible drinking through the media.

John, who was a finalist in the Best Community Media category, lost to journalist Desiree Rorke from fellow Media24 publication, Tygerburger.

The finalists for the Consumers Choice Award was only announced on the night as finalists in the six categories were pitted against each other and tasked to get the most number of votes through an online voting competition on Facebook.

“It was a complete surprise to hear my name as one of the finalists in the Consumers Choice category because I was up against journalists from Cape Town and Johannesburg, much bigger cities than Pietermaritzburg.

“I am honoured to receive the first Consumers Choice Award.

“It’s even more meaningful to know that it was the people of Pietermaritzburg, my family, friends and all those who I’ve worked with over the past five years who got behind me and voted for me.

“It is testament to the people of the city and the community we live in to know that, even though we’re small, our community gets behind you and supports you as one of their own, so this one is for you Pietermaritzburg,” said John.
