THERE is a new head of Hayfields Primary School - Gael Lawrence.

Lawrence, the newly appointed principal, is ecstatic about her position and has one aim, to put the school on the map in Pietermaritzburg.

Lawrence, from Pietermaritzburg, matriculated from Haythorne Secondary where she was head girl.

She has been in the teaching industry for 30 years.

She began teaching at Forest Hill Primary and became head of department. She moved to Longmarket Girls’ School where she was deputy principal. In August 2015 she became acting principal of Hayfields Primary and was officially named principal in December 2015.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Lawrence said she has always had a passion for teaching and children.

“The ability to improve a child’s life, shape their character and see them succeed is so rewarding. For me it’s about dealing with the children on a personal level and interacting with them. They are often the ones that teach adults things,” she said.

Lawrence said despite the challenges the school faces with being new and unable to offer all the sporting codes including swimming, she said the school is growing with a staff complement of 40, and has 610 pupils.

“We are all working hard to get the school in the map. I have an amazing staff who are always enthusiastic. Our children are excited about their school and their parents have confidence in us and support us.”

Lawrence said she is honoured and humbled to be entrusted with taking the new school to greater heights and embraces the challenges that lie ahead.

“We as a team, with God’s grace, can only take the school from strength to strength, making it a school of choice, not one of convenience.”
