ON Monday morning a 72-year-old pensioner who had travelled from Taylors Halt to apply for a smart ID card from the Church Street Department of Home Affairs branch had to be sent back home because the department is currently updating its system.

Getrude Majola said she did not know the department was upgrading its system.

“I have wasted money to come here and apply for the smart ID card. No one from the department bothered to tell us in advance that the system was down. Now have to go back home,” said Majola.

Majola had to get a smart ID card because she had lost her green bar-coded ID.

The department put up notices at its entrance notifying people of the upgrade.

Maritzburg Echo reporter contacted Home Affairs on Monday and an employee confirmed that the system was down.

“The system is currently being upgraded and everything should be back to normal on Thursday,” said the employee.
